For Photographers
How do I stay safe as an underwater photographer?
Your own safety as a photographer matters as much as your model's, because a compromised photographer cannot help anyone in an emergency. Complete a recognized freediving certification such as PADI Freediver, Molchanovs Level 1, or Apnea Total Beginner before any deep or extended underwater work.
Take a current CPR and oxygen-provider course, ideally renewed every two years, and carry a basic emergency oxygen kit at every shoot. Always work with at least one dedicated safety swimmer whose sole job is to watch the people in the water, never the photographer's screen. Build in mandatory surface rest intervals between dives — never do consecutive deep breath-hold cycles without recovery, because that pattern leads to shallow-water blackout.
Hydrate aggressively before and during every shoot, because dehydration silently shortens safe breath holds. Maintain a clearly written emergency action plan for every location, including the address of the nearest hospital and the local emergency phone number. Treat safety as a non-negotiable foundation of your business, because a single serious incident can end both a life and a career.
