For Photographers

Do I need to be a certified diver to shoot underwater portraits?

Scuba diving certification is not a requirement for underwater portrait photography because, as we teach in our workshops, the vast majority of professional underwater portraits are captured in shallow water between 3 and 8 feet of depth on a single breath-hold. In fact, scuba gear often gets in the way during portrait sessions, creates distracting bubbles, and makes close interaction with your subject more difficult. However, freediving fundamentals are highly recommended for any photographer who wants to work comfortably, safely, and professionally underwater.

Understanding how to extend your breath-hold, equalize pressure, manage your body position, and remain calm while operating expensive camera equipment makes you a dramatically more effective and safer photographer. We cover the essential freediving basics for photographers at every workshop we host, and we encourage all participants to continue their freediving education through certified courses after the workshop. Organizations like Performance Freediving International, Molchanovs, and AIDA offer entry-level certifications that translate directly to safer, more productive underwater shoots.

A simple Level 1 freediving course typically takes two to three days and is one of the best investments any underwater photographer can make in their craft. Even experienced photographers benefit from refresher freediving training every few years to keep techniques sharp. Beyond personal capability, formal freediving credentials also strengthen your professional credibility when pitching to commercial clients who value documented safety training. Pairing your photography portfolio with safety certifications on your website signals to clients that you take their wellbeing as seriously as their imagery.
