For Photographers
What camera do I need for underwater portrait photography?
Most modern mirrorless or DSLR camera bodies are capable of producing stunning underwater portraits when paired with a proper, leak-proof underwater housing and the right optical ports. We strongly recommend full-frame camera bodies with excellent low-light performance because underwater environments are inherently darker than land, and you will benefit from cleaner high-ISO images. For lenses, fast prime lenses in the 24 to 50 millimeter range are ideal for underwater portraiture, as they offer beautiful depth of field and excellent sharpness.
A dome port is essential for keeping horizons straight and minimizing distortion when shooting through the water's surface. While action cameras like GoPros and modern smartphones are fantastic for personal memories and social media content, they generally lack the sensor size, dynamic range, and lens options needed to produce gallery-quality, commercially viable underwater portraits that clients are willing to invest in. Industry-standard housing brands include Nauticam, Ikelite, Aquatica, and Sea & Sea, with prices ranging from roughly two thousand dollars for entry-level systems to well over ten thousand for top-tier professional rigs.
Always budget for proper port maintenance, including o-ring replacements and silicone grease, because a single flooded housing can destroy a camera body costing thousands of dollars. We recommend test-flooding any new housing with a moisture detector and a non-essential body or weight before trusting it with your primary kit. Strobe arms, lanyards, and float collars are easy-to-overlook accessories that make handling the system in the water dramatically easier. Renting a housing for your first few shoots is also a smart way to explore the system without a major upfront investment.
