An underwater maternity photoshoot is the one session where pregnancy finally feels weightless. No gravity, no aching back, no holding a pose — just fabric, light and a body doing something it will never do again. This guide walks you through how these sessions actually work at Water Bear Photography: what happens on the day, how we keep you safe, what to wear, where we shoot, and what the whole thing costs.

Water does something to a maternity portrait that no studio setup can imitate. Your weight disappears, your hair and gown move on their own, and the light bends into soft ribbons around you. Most clients tell me they felt more comfortable in the water than they had in weeks.
It is also deeply symbolic. Your baby has spent their entire existence in water. Photographing you weightless, suspended, holding your belly, is the closest a camera gets to showing what that feels like from the inside.
Do I Need to Know How to Swim?
You do not need to be a swimmer, and you do not need to hold your breath for a long time. Almost every underwater maternity image is made in a handful of seconds — you go down, you breathe out, we shoot, you come up.
Safety is built into the session rather than bolted on. Sessions are run with a dedicated safety person in the water whose only job is you, we shoot in water where you can stand or reach a wall or ledge, and we stop the moment you want to stop.
- •A safety swimmer is in the water with you for the entire session
- •Short, repeated attempts instead of long breath holds
- •You set the pace — every client gets as many breaks as they want
- •We rehearse each pose above water before you ever go under
Most expecting parents photograph between roughly 28 and 36 weeks, when the bump reads clearly in an image but you are still moving comfortably. Earlier than that and the silhouette can get lost inside a flowing gown; much later and the water time becomes tiring.
Book the date well before that window. Sessions are custom-designed around your gown, your location and the light, and the planning consultation happens weeks before the camera comes out.

Fabric is the single biggest decision you will make. Water rewards lightweight, flowing, non-absorbent material — chiffon, tulle, silky knits — and punishes anything heavy, stiff or clingy. A gown that looks beautiful on a hanger can sink flat the moment it gets wet.
Colour matters just as much. Deep jewel tones, whites and warm neutrals hold their shape against blue and green water, while very pale washed-out shades can disappear.
- •Choose long, generous fabric with plenty of movement
- •Avoid glitter, sequins and anything that can shed into the water
- •Bring options — we often shoot two or three looks in one session
- •Studio wardrobe pieces are available so you do not have to buy a gown
Both work beautifully and they produce completely different images. A pool gives you controlled temperature, controlled clarity and total privacy, which makes it the easiest first underwater experience. Florida's springs give you that unmistakable blue, sand and cypress backdrop that no pool can fake.
Springs come with real conditions to respect: flow, water temperature, park rules and other visitors. We choose the location together based on your comfort level and the look you are after.
How the Session Actually Runs
- •Design and planning consultation — location, gowns, colours, the mood you want
- •Session day: hair and makeup, a dry rehearsal of every pose, then the water
- •Short sets in the water with breaks in between, usually far shorter than clients expect
- •An artwork selection session where you choose your final images
- •Your finished artwork, albums or wall pieces — plus our happiness guarantee
Underwater maternity shoots start at $2,990 and include a $2,000 print credit toward your artwork. Studio and outdoor maternity sessions start at $990 with a $500 print credit.
Digital images start at $250 and artwork and albums start at $730. Every session includes the planning consultation, the shoot itself, the artwork selection session and your print credit.
Is an underwater maternity shoot safe during pregnancy?
Sessions are run with a dedicated safety swimmer in the water with you, in water where you can stand or reach support, using short repeated breath holds rather than long ones. As with any activity during pregnancy, talk to your care provider first.
How many weeks pregnant should I be?
Most clients photograph between roughly 28 and 36 weeks, when the bump reads clearly in the frame and you are still moving comfortably.
What if I cannot open my eyes underwater?
That is very common and it is not a problem. Many of the most beautiful underwater maternity images are made with eyes closed, and we rehearse everything above water first.
How much does an underwater maternity photoshoot cost?
Underwater maternity sessions start at $2,990 and include a $2,000 print credit. Studio and outdoor maternity sessions start at $990 with a $500 print credit.
Do I need my own gown?
