For Photographers
Do I need insurance for underwater photoshoots?
Yes, carrying comprehensive insurance is an absolute necessity before conducting any paid underwater photoshoot, and it is one of the first requirements we emphasize to photographers who attend our workshops or join our professional community. At minimum, you should have general liability insurance that specifically covers your photography business, equipment insurance that protects your gear against water damage, theft, or loss, and a properly written client liability waiver that is reviewed by a legal professional familiar with your jurisdiction. Critically, you must verify with your insurance provider that underwater work is explicitly covered under your policy, because many standard photography liability policies contain exclusions for water-based activities unless you purchase a specific rider or endorsement.
Do not assume you are covered simply because you have a general photography policy. The relatively small cost of proper insurance is insignificant compared to the financial and legal risk of an uncovered incident, and it is a hallmark of a professional operation that clients will respect and trust. Reputable insurance providers serving working photographers in the United States include Hill & Usher (Package Choice), Full Frame Insurance, PPA's PhotoCare, and Athos.
Internationally, many photographers work with brokers who specialize in marine and aquatic-related activity coverage. When renting or accessing private pools, springs, or other locations, many venues will also require proof of insurance with the venue listed as an additional insured. Keep digital copies of your policy, waivers, and certificates of insurance readily accessible on your phone in case a client, venue, or workshop host requests them on short notice. Reviewing your coverage annually as your business grows ensures you are not under-insured against larger commercial bookings or destination work.
