What should I wear for an underwater photoshoot?
Flowy, lightweight, water-safe fabrics such as silk, chiffon, organza, and tulle photograph extraordinarily beautifully underwater because they billow and swirl in ways that create magical, painterly shapes around your body. At our studio, we maintain a curated wardrobe closet filled with dozens of stunning dresses in sizes ranging from 0 to 22 that you are welcome to use free of charge during your session. Alternatively, we can work with you to plan a completely custom wardrobe that matches your personal style and the mood you want to create.
The fabrics to avoid are stiff or heavy materials like thick cotton, structured satin, denim, or leather, as well as large busy prints and anything that might bleed dye into the water. During your pre-shoot consultation, we will go through wardrobe options together and help you choose pieces that will look stunning beneath the surface. Color also plays a critical role: jewel tones like emerald, sapphire, ruby, and gold pop dramatically against blue water, while soft pastels and whites read as ethereal and romantic.
Avoid garments with sequins, beads, or embellishments that may detach or sink awkwardly when fully saturated. If you plan to bring your own dress, we strongly recommend testing it in a bathtub beforehand to confirm it does not become transparent, cling unflatteringly, or release dye. Layered fabrics with long trains, capes, and oversized sleeves are particularly stunning because they create the dramatic movement that makes underwater portraits feel like Renaissance paintings.
