How do I prepare for an underwater modeling session?
Proper preparation for an underwater modeling session begins the day before your shoot and can make a dramatic difference in your comfort, endurance, and the quality of your final images. Hydration is critical, so drink plenty of water throughout the day before to keep your skin and body functioning optimally in the aquatic environment. Eat a light, balanced meal one to two hours before you arrive, avoiding heavy, greasy foods that can cause discomfort during breath-holds.
Skip alcohol entirely and minimize caffeine the morning of your shoot, as both substances dehydrate the body and can increase anxiety. Avoid applying lotions, oils, or heavy moisturizers before the shoot because these products create surface slicks on the water that can ruin lighting and leave an oily film on your skin in photographs. Bring a warm, cozy robe for breaks between dives, some light snacks for energy, and a hair tie to keep your hair manageable during surface intervals.
Get a full night of restorative sleep, ideally at least eight hours, because breath-hold work is significantly harder on a fatigued body. Practice slow, deep diaphragmatic breathing exercises in the days leading up to the shoot to expand your lung capacity and calm your nervous system. Arrive at least fifteen minutes early so you have time to settle in, meet the crew, and acclimate to the environment without feeling rushed. Mental preparation matters as much as physical preparation, so spend a few quiet moments visualizing the shoot going smoothly before you arrive on set.
