For Models

Do I need modeling experience to model underwater?

For personal portrait sessions with Water Bear Photography, absolutely no prior modeling experience is required whatsoever. We work with clients of all ages, body types, and experience levels, and we direct you through every pose, expression, and movement with clear, patient instruction tailored to your comfort level. However, for paid commercial modeling work or our specialized underwater modeling workshop, we do recommend either previous portrait modeling experience or a strong baseline of comfort in the water.

This is because commercial shoots and workshop scenarios require you to take direction quickly, repeat specific sequences consistently, and maintain composure and expression through multiple dives with minimal rest. If you are a complete beginner but interested in pursuing underwater modeling professionally, our workshop is an excellent starting point, as we teach the fundamentals from the ground up and you will leave with portfolio-quality images. Many of our most successful working models began with zero land or underwater experience and built their careers entirely through the Underwater Creatives Academy.

Practicing in any local pool, even for thirty minutes a few times a week, will accelerate your readiness more than any other single activity. Recording yourself on a waterproof phone or GoPro and watching the footage objectively is one of the fastest ways to identify what is working and what needs adjustment. We also encourage aspiring models to study published underwater editorials to develop a personal sense of what kind of imagery resonates with them most. Above all, what we look for first is willingness to learn, communicate openly, and trust the process.
