Mentoring / FAQ

How much does a photography mentor cost?

Photography mentoring in the US typically ranges from about $150–$500 for a single 1:1 session to $1,000–$2,500 per month for ongoing business mentoring. Water Bear's Business Mentoring is $1390/month biweekly, $1990/month weekly and $990 per person per month in a group cohort.

What mentoring actually costs in the US

Pricing for 1:1 photography mentoring is not standardised. Across the US, one-off sessions with an established professional generally sit somewhere between $150 and $500 per hour, while ongoing monthly mentorships with an experienced business mentor commonly run from roughly $1,000 to $2,500 per month. Group cohorts are cheaper per person because the mentor's time is shared.

Anything dramatically below that range is usually a recorded course with a community attached rather than genuine one-to-one time.

Our published monthly business mentoring packages:

    • Biweekly Mentorship — $1390 per month: two 60-minute 1:1 Zoom calls per month, plus support between sessions
    • Weekly Mentorship — $1990 per month: four 60-minute 1:1 Zoom calls per month and a living 90-day roadmap refreshed monthly
    • Group Cohort Program — $990 per person per month: two 90-minute group calls plus one 30-minute private call each month
    • All monthly packages have a 2–3 month minimum commitment

Why there is a minimum commitment

Rebranding, repricing and rebuilding a marketing funnel do not resolve inside a single billing cycle. A two to three month minimum exists so the work can actually be implemented and measured rather than abandoned after the first strategy call.

    Is mentoring worth the money?

The honest test is arithmetic. If mentoring helps you raise an average sale by a few hundred dollars, or book two additional sessions a month, a monthly package pays for itself quickly. If you are not currently booking at all, private craft and portfolio mentoring booked as single sessions is usually the smarter first purchase.

What drives the price up or down

A few factors move mentoring rates more than any brand name does: whether the format is 1:1 or group, how many touchpoints happen between sessions, whether the mentor's own business is currently at the level you want to reach, and how niche the specialty is. Highly specialised skills — underwater work, fine-art printing, commercial video pipelines — tend to command higher rates than broad generalist coaching because fewer mentors can teach them credibly.

This holds across creative fields, not just photography: a mentor who books national commercial clients will generally price differently than one coaching hobbyists into their first paid gigs, because the ceiling of what you can learn from each is different.

    Comparing the cost to alternatives

It helps to weigh mentoring against what else that money could buy. A single $1390–$1990 monthly mentoring package costs roughly the same as one piece of camera or lighting gear, one paid ad campaign that may or may not convert, or a handful of stock courses that are never finished. The difference is that mentoring is applied specifically to your bottleneck rather than general information.

For creatives who are unsure whether they need business mentoring at all, a lower-cost entry point is a single Private Mentoring session focused on craft or portfolio — it tests the working relationship before committing to a multi-month program.

How to budget for mentoring as a working creative

Treat mentoring as a business expense with an expected payback, not a discretionary purchase. A simple rule: if the monthly package costs $990–$1990 and your average client value is even a few hundred dollars, the package pays for itself with one or two additional bookings, assuming the strategy is actually implemented.

    • Track your current average sale or day rate before you start
    • Recheck it at 60 and 90 days into a monthly program
    • Log every action item you actually completed versus what was recommended
    • Decide whether to continue, downgrade to biweekly, or move to the group cohort based on that data

    Red flags in mentorship pricing

Be cautious of programs that require a large lump-sum payment upfront with no minimum-commitment structure explained, that will not disclose what is included in a session versus sold as an upsell afterward, or that price entirely on urgency and scarcity rather than on what is actually delivered. Transparent pricing, like a published rate for biweekly, weekly and group formats, lets you compare against the market before you buy.
